Doi Suthep Temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Geef jouw mening over deze video :vote 1vote 2vote 3vote 4vote 5
Doi Suthep is a mountain, about 15 kilometers from Chiang Mai, with on it Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, a Holy Buddhist Temple. Every Temple with a name starting with Wat Prathat contains Buddha relics and therefore is Holy to Buddhists. The place can easily be reached from Chiang Mai. I would say that it is hard not to find a bus or car that wants to bring you there. As you can see on this page, Doi Suthep certainly is worth a visit.

Wat Umong Temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand
History: The monastery at Wat Umong is one of the oldest in Chiang Mai, dating back to 1300 A.D. The fable goes that a king built the brick-lined tunnels for an eccentric monk named Thera Jan. Once upon a time there were paintings decorated on the wall which dated back to about 1380. You can enter the tunnels to see the small shrines inside (a flashlight is useful). The adjoining stupa was constructed about 1520 over an earlier stupa (1400-1550). The monastery was eventually abandoned, though Japanese troops were said to have a stronghold here during World War 2. Since 1948, the Thai prince Jao Chun Sirorot has been active in rebuilding and reestablishing the monastery. In 1949 he invited Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (founder of Suan Mokkh in southern Thailand) to come and live in the monastery. Obligations kept Buddhadasa Bhikkhu from coming and instead he sent Ajahn Pannananda and other monks to help set up and run Wat Umong.

Wat Chedi Luang Varaviharn
Wat Chedi Luang must have been the most impressive temple in Chiang Mai. Built about 600 years ago, the huge chedi which gave the temple its name (the name of the temple translates to "royal pagoda") must have soared high above the surrounding city. We say "must have" because the chedi was mostly destroyed within a few hundred years of its construction. Some say it was an earthquake in the 17th century that did the deed; others say it was King Taksin's cannons firing on the city to chase out the Burmese in the 18th century.

Sunday Market à Chiang Mai
The Thriving sunday market in Chiangmai is certainly a sight to behold. Located on the Royal Ave.(Ratchadamnern Road) inside the old city of Chiangmai the market seems to be ever expanding down more streets and alleys leading off the central road. With all traffic halted every sunday, people are free to walk without the hassle and stress of cars and motorcycles whizzing by. This makes for a pleasant and fascinating day out. Walk along and bargain with the numerous sellers and listen to the various busker's playing Thai and western music. Along the road are restaurants and bars if you want to relax after the walk. The atmosphere is typical Northern Thailand. Products include many high quality articles from around the northern provinces. Featured are the "one product one village" products in which the winners of the best product award from each village or "dumbon" are given free space to display their wares. The Sunday Market differs from the "night Bazzar" which is open every night further west, where the products are somewhat less interesting and the products more limited in terms of originality.
